WEBSITE & INTERNET GLOSSARYThe following glossary of website design, internet and computer terms may help you to better understand some of those confusing words and phrases that are banded about today. Sotware usually from computer security specialist software firms that will detect and remove computer viruses
Bandwidth
This is the rate at which data is transfered per second. High bandwidth connections can carry video images, large amounts of graphics or other heavy amounts of data. The larger the bandwidth the bigger the amount of transferable data at any given time
Bookmark
A Bookmark is the file in your computer or browser where you are able to save website addresses of special pages you want to keep for ready access
Browser
A software program that allows a user to view websites and other associated material on the internet. The most widely used browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer although other types of browser exist
Broadband
In general Broadband is a telephone connection, hard wired or mobile, that allows a user faster internet use and a greater bandwidth usage than possible with conventional modem and internet subscription connection. BT and many other telephone service providers offer broadband connection options
Cache
Is where the information, files, graphics, images, addresses etc. of the websites you have visited are stored. This is temporary internet information storage and means that when you visit the same website next time it should load faster as many web page elements will already be in your computer. You should, however, empty the cache regularly as you may simply be viewing old versions of an updated site when you revisit
CGI
A script, or a set of given rules, that governs how a web server will interact with another program or software on that server. Often used when designing a website for generating emails, forms usage, collecting cookies and other input/output services
Client
1. When you access the internet your computer is the client and the web server from which you are getting the information is the host

Generally refered to as the information that you receive when looking at websites or reading emails ie, the text, the images, files and folders contained therein
Cookie
This is a short piece of information sent by a website's server to a user's computer. The server uses this information on a user's return visit and will recognise that the user has been to the website before and may customise the website view for the user. Many websites and their associated companies use cookies to keep track of pages visited by the user ie. registration pages, shopping information, log in areas etc. Some sites may refuse access to their material unless cookies are accepted by the user's browser
CSS (Cascading Style Sheet)
This controls and manages the look of your web page by managing and dictating the appearance of text, images, alignment and other elements of the page. The css standard provides a list of styles that relate to one or many items within a website's pages and by altering a single specification on the css the look of one or many pages will be changed
Cyberspace
Refers to the many information resources that are available online through the internet. It is really a cultural definition developed to explain electronically connected communities and users of the internet system. It is also a way of defining the real and physical world from the digital and electronic based world. - See also Cyber Dream

Default
Is the setting or layout of a program, computer or machine chosen by the manufacturer and remains until the user changes the setting
Domain name
This is a unique name that identifies and refers to internet or web sites. It is the internet's way of translating a digital numeric address into an easy to use and understand numbers and words combination ie. www.cyber-dream.co.uk
Download
To transfer data and/or information from one computer, usually a server, to another, usually the client, ie. updates for software, copying files or downloading images or videos. The opposite of Upload(ing)
E-mail
Messages called email (electronic mail) which are sent through the computer network to individuals, groups or companies. Email messages are generally text format but can contain images within the text or as attachments and can also include sound, video and other graphics. Email adresses always include the @ symbol, for example info@cyber-dream.co.uk. Email spamming is the electronic equivalent of unsolicited junk mail through your door's letter box
Email Header
The information area that contains details of and identifies the sender and recipient of the email. Also includes the date and time the message was sent as well as the subject of the message
Encryption
Is a means of rendering sent and transmitted data unreadable to anyone except the recipient of that data. Often used for securing sensitive information, credit card transactions and other private details
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
A pre-emptive method of answering questions which you may have though of but haven't yet asked or found answers to in other pages of a website. FAQs are often the most commonly asked questions relating to a website, discussion group, product etc and will often provide answers in a succinct but helpful manner
File Sharing
Being able to access files and information on a computer from another different computer
Firewall
Usually software that will secure a computer by blocking restricted or unauthorised access. Firewalls are often built into computer operating systems by have to activated or set up by the user
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
A method of transfering data or files from one computer to another. Examples of FTP programs are Ipswitch and Cute
